While heading to Green Bay, Wisconsin, everyone in the car was starving and needed to stop for a late dinner. Since we drove through Escanaba, MI and decided that pizza was the food topic of choice, I looked up places for pizza on TripAdvisor to see what looked good, and since it was after 8 PM, not many places that weren't chain were still open. I read mixed reviews, most being good for Mueller's Pizza and since they close at 11 PM we were all set!
The inside decor was an old diner style, emphasis on old because it was pretty warn down, but for the most part it was pretty clean looking. We were the only ones that were eating there minus a few pick-ups, and I had assumed it was just because we went at a really odd time on a Friday night. The waitress was friendly and gave us menus and took our drink orders. The menu was small but since we went there for pizza it was a pretty easy decision.
While we waited, we ordered nachos for an appetizer. Although the chips were stale, we were hungry and didn't seem to care. And you can't go wrong with this kind of nacho cheese, because since it comes from a can you always know what to expect and the flavor never changes.
Be sure when you order a pizza, that you check the sizing that they have. A small at Mueller's is more towards a personal pan, and a large is more like a small-medium, etc. We ordered a large pepperoni pizza. I noticed many people don't like when pizza places cut the pizza into squares, but I love it. The cheese had a nice golden brown on top and every slice had pepperoni and was gooey, in a good way. Granted, this pizza tasted like a larger version of a Jack's pizza from the frozen section of the grocery store, with the thin hard crust, and the sauce tasted almost identical.
I would have given this restaurant a rating of 3 out of 5, until I saw something that shocked everyone at our table. While we were over half way done with the pizza, someone who worked back in the kitchen walked up the basement stairs with the pizza crust. No big deal right? A lot of people don't make their own crusts, it is what it is. As he walked closer to our table since we were sitting right by the cash register and the closest table to the kitchen, we noticed a lot more than pre-made crust. The guy was resting a large stack of the thin crust on his stomach and bare arm for balance, but the kicker here is that the crust was not wrapped in plastic. So this guy is bringing up crust from the basement first of all not covered with anything, and to top it off they were touching his hairy arm and stained t-shirt. If we hadn't already eaten that much of our pizza, I would have gotten the heck out of there and fast. Be careful of reviews that you read. The food might taste okay, and maybe you are a loyal customer and eat there for a reason that is more nostalgic than the food being good, but cleanliness is number one in a restaurant even before taste of food. This is one restaurant that I can say without a dough, that I will never be back to.
